Vivitar XC-2 with Vivitar 50mm f/1.7 Lens

This is an M42 screw mount SLR made by Cosina for Vivitar, as was the lens. Based on the serial numbers, they were probably made in 1978. Vivitar used very many different manufacturers to produce their lenses. In the lenses of this era, it is possible to determine the manufacturer by looking at the serial number.
A couple of special features in this camera are the selectable spot or average metering modes, as well as a multi-exposure lever. Many mechanical SLRs are capable of multiple exposures by some trickery, but having it purpose built certainly reduces the chance of failure.
The black box on the right is XC-A, a funny little gadget to add aperture priority automatic exposure to this camera. It attaches to the accessory shoe on top of the camera. It works by reading the light meter’s output (via the cord), and by physically turning the shutter speed dial with a little motor. Totally useless for anyone capable of turning the dial themselves, but…
Shutter speeds: 4s-1/1000s, M, B. Self-timer. Electronic shutter, only B and one mechanical speed (marked "M") available without a battery. This is an unfortunate shortcoming of electronic shutters, compared to most of my other vintage cameras which will work happily without batteries.
Flash sync: 1/60s (X-sync hotshoe and terminal)
Horizontal split-prism viewfinder. Bright and large, about the same quality as that of the Spotmatic SP IIa.
Stopped-down metering, with both average (Av) and spot (Sp) metering modes, with LED display (unfortunately, a match-needle display would be much better, especially in old cameras where the accuracy of the meter may not be that exact).
Battery: 2x SR44 (2x 1.5v) or 1x DL1/3N (3v)
Light seals on these cameras will almost certainly need replacing, as with many other vintage cameras. I’ve replaced the ones in mine myself with good results.
